About
Roman well is located next to the southwestern wall of the Kalemegdan's Upper Town, near to the monument "Winner" and King gates.
The well was built between 1717 and 1731, during the Baroque Austrian reconstruction of the fort. On the fortress of that time this building was designated as the "Great Well". The name "Roman Well" was first recorded in the XIX century. The corridor leads to the central area with a well diameter of 3.40 m and a depth of about 51m (bottom of the well is below the bottom of a river Sava). A series of two spiral stairways, one of which served as a descent, and another for climbing people and cattle, descends into the well to a depth of 35.30m.
The building is not accessible to people in wheelchairs, people with walking difficulties and people with orthopedic aids are advised to come with escort.
