About

Within the Belgrade Fortress, Nebojša Tower is the only remaining preserved medieval building. It was built around 1460 and belongs to the oldest type of early artillery cannon towers. At the time when it was built it was a significant achievement of contemporary architecture. It was built to defend the city from the Turks and in a wider sense represented a part of the defense system - the predecessor of Christianity - which for decades has successfully stopped Turkey's breakthroughs towards the center of Europe. More centuries later, when it lost its former military character, it was turned into a prison. At the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries, it was a symbol of Turkish repression and the place of the suffering of the Christians of the Balkan peoples in the liberation from the centuries-old Ottoman rule.

Within the tower there are permanent settings "Tower of Nebojša as dungeon" - on the ground floor, "Riga od Fere" - on the first level, "The First Sebrian Uprising" - on the second level and "Belgrade in the first half of the 19th century" at the last level of the tower.

Access to the tower and the ground floor setting are accesible to all persons with disabilities and persons with special needs, while to the other levels there is an innaccessible staircase.
