About

The Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade is the largest Serbian Orthodox temple and the largest Orthodox temple in the Balkans. It is located in the eastern part of Svetosavski plateau, at the end of the Belgrade line Kalemegdan - Trg republike - Terazije - Beograjanka - the temple of St. Sava, in the municipality of Vracar.

It was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, with four bell towers, 44 meters high. The height of the top of the dome is 70 m, while the main gold plated cross is another 12 m high, giving the top of the temple a total height of 82 m and an altitude of 134 m (64 m above the Sava River). Because of this, it occupies a prominent place on the Belgrade horizon and is visible from all the city's roads. The construction of the temple was funded by voluntary contributions, as well as from the postage stamps payment.

The temple occupies an area of 3,500 square meters on the ground floor, with an additional 1,500 square meters on three galleries on the first level. There is also a gallery of 120 m² on the second level, on which there is an outside viewpoint that extends around the entire dome. The temple is 91 m in the east-west direction, and in the north-south direction it is 81 m.The temple is covered with white marble and granite, which was also attended by the Slovenian Marble Hotavlje. Sculpting, which is still in place, will be done in the mosaic technique. A huge mosaic of Christ the Pantocrator is planned in the main dome.

The Temple is partly accessible to persons with disabilities and persons with special needs, with the note that the internal works are still in progress. The blind and visually impaired persons are advised to come with escort.
