About

The Belgrade fortress was created over a long period from the 1st to the 18th century, from the Roman castrum (II century), through the Byzantine castle (VI and XII century), medieval Serbian capital (XIII and XV century), to the Austrian and Ottoman artillery fortification. (XVII and XVIII centuries)

It was built at the beginning of the 1st century as a palisade with earthy ramparts, in order to develop during the centuries into the Roman castrum (II century), the Byzantine castle (VI and XII century), the medieval fortified capital of Serbian Despotovina (XIII and XV century) and finally the Austrian / Ottoman artillery fortification (XVII and XVIII centuries). Today, along with Kalemegdan parc, it is a unique museum of Belgrade past that is called Kalemegdan.

Kalemegdan consists of the fortress itself, divided into Upper Town and Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park. By entering the Upper Town you will find Despot's Gate (named after the founder of the Serbian medieval capital - Despot Stefan Lazarevic), the Clock Tower, the Roman Well, the Victory Monument.

In the lower town you can visit Tower Nebojša, Amam - Turkish bath, a big barrel warehouse, Gate of Carlo the VI-th.. In the beautiful park surrounding, you can visit the Military Museum, the Natural History Museum Gallery, the Cvijeta Zuzorić Pavilion, the Church of Ružica, the Church of St. Petka.

Kalemegdan is accesible to persons with disabilities and persons with special needs only to a certain degree. Access to the upper town is enabled for wheelchair users over the clock tower, while access to the lower town is provided via Vidin Gate or from Nebojsa Tower. Escort is advised for blind people.
